NFL and Netflix Plan to “Eventize” More Games Beyond Christmas

Netflix is showing strong interest in broadcasting more NFL games beyond the two Christmas games it already has. The streaming giant wants to turn special NFL games into big events that stand out.

Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos spoke with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell about expanding their partnership. Sarandos said they want to “eventize” games, meaning making certain matches feel special and attract a large audience.

Netflix already streams two NFL games on Christmas. These games are different from the regular Sunday games that are held by traditional TV networks. Instead, Netflix looks at special occasions like holiday games, international games, or games on Fridays or Saturdays. The NFL is open to playing games on various days if they can draw a big audience and earn good revenue.

Netflix also adds value by attracting new viewers. For example, during last year’s Christmas game, Netflix produced a halftime show featuring Beyoncé, which brought in fans who might not usually watch football.

The NFL used to avoid playing games on Christmas if the holiday fell on a weekday. But now, the league plans to play three games every Christmas, no matter what day it is. This change is mainly because Netflix is willing to pay more for these special games.

Looking ahead, Netflix and the NFL may find more games to turn into popular, profitable events beyond just the Christmas season. This partnership could change how NFL games are watched in the future.
