Pixar’s highly anticipated sequel to the 2015 hit film Inside Out is finally set to hit theaters on June 14, 2024.

The movie introduces new emotions to challenge Joy and the original team, expanding on themes of healthy emotional expression and growth as Riley navigates adolescence.

Cast and Voice Actors

The star-studded cast includes Amy Poehler reprising her role as Joy, with Phyllis Smith and Lewis Black returning as Sadness and Anger, respectively. Mindy Kaling and Bill Hader, who voiced Disgust and Fear in the original, will not be reprising their roles due to a pay dispute. Instead, Liza Lapira and Tony Hale will take over these roles.

New additions to the cast include Maya Hawke as Anxiety, Ayo Edebiri as Envy, Adèle Exarchopoulos as Ennui, Paul Walter Hauser as Embarrassment, and June Squibb as Nostalgia. Diane Lane and Kyle MacLachlan return as Riley’s parents, while Kensington Tallman takes over the role of Riley from Kaitlyn Dias.

Plot and Trailer

The film follows Riley, now a teenager, as she experiences a range of new emotions, including Anxiety, Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment. Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust must learn to adapt to these new emotions and find a way to work together effectively.

The first trailer for Inside Out 2 was released in November 2023, introducing Anxiety and hinting at the new emotions that Riley will be experiencing. The second trailer, released in March 2024, provided a more detailed look at the new emotions and how they will impact Riley’s life.

A final trailer was released in June 2024, offering a glimpse into the emotional turmoil that Riley faces as she navigates adolescence. The trailer highlights how Riley represses her emotions, manifesting them as literal characters trapped in bottles.

Release Date and Marketing

Inside Out 2 is scheduled to premiere at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles on June 10, 2024, and will be released in theaters across the United States on June 14, 2024. The film will also screen at the 2024 Annecy International Animation Film Festival on the same day.

The teaser trailer for the film was released on November 9, 2023, and became the most-watched animated film trailer launch in the Walt Disney Company’s history, surpassing the previous record holder, Frozen II.

Critical Reception

The film has received generally favorable reviews from critics, with a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a Metacritic score of 74 out of 100.

Box Office Projections

The budget for Inside Out 2 is estimated to be $200 million, with Variety projecting the film to gross $85 million in its opening weekend.
