Donnie Yen Confirms Sleeping Dogs Movie Is Canceled

The long-awaited Sleeping Dogs live-action movie is officially off the table. Actor Donnie Yen, who was set to star in the adaptation of the 2012 cult-favorite video game, has confirmed the project is no longer moving forward.

    What Happened to the Movie?

In 2017, fans were excited when a Sleeping Dogs movie was announced. The project promised to bring the action-packed world of the game to life, with Donnie Yen in the lead role.

Yen was riding high on the success of Ip Man and Rogue One, and director Timo Tjahjanto was reportedly approached to helm the film.

However, after 2018, updates on the project disappeared. Recently, Yen told Polygon that despite his efforts, the movie is not happening.

“I spent a lot of time and did a lot of work with these producers, and I even invested some of my own money into obtaining the drafts and some of the rights,” Yen explained. “I waited for years. And I really wanted to do it… but unfortunately… I don’t know, you know how Hollywood goes, right?”

Yen called the situation “unfortunate” but said he’s ready to move on to better projects.

    The Legacy of Sleeping Dogs

Sleeping Dogs was developed by United Front Games and published by Square Enix in 2012. Set in Hong Kong, the open-world crime game followed undercover cop Wei Shen as he infiltrated the Triads. Its mix of intense action, immersive world design, and a star-studded voice cast—including Emma Stone and Lucy Liu—earned it a cult following.

Despite its success, the game’s planned sequel and spinoff, Triad Wars, were never completed. The game series was left dormant after United Front Games shut down, and now the movie adaptation has met the same fate.

    Donnie Yen’s Upcoming Projects

Although the Sleeping Dogs movie won’t happen, Donnie Yen continues to stay busy. He recently starred as Caine in John Wick: Chapter 4 and is reportedly in talks to star in and direct a Caine spinoff film. Fans can also look forward to his upcoming action movie, The Prosecutor.

For now, fans of Sleeping Dogs can revisit the game’s Definitive Edition, which still holds up as a thrilling experience for fans of open-world crime stories.
