‘The Rookie’ creator Alexi Hawley has confirmed that the long-rumored spinoff of the hit ABC series is still in active development—though nothing is greenlit just yet.

In a new interview with Deadline, Hawley revealed he’s been working on script revisions for the spinoff, which was first reported in December and is set in Washington state. The series centers on a male police officer entering a new phase of his life.

“There’s a script, I’ve been doing some drafts and getting some notes,” Hawley said. “You know me, I’m a hopeful person… So let’s see.”

ABC has not made an official commitment. Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich simply said, “I don’t have any news to share right now.”

While fans wait, Hawley is also fielding questions about The Recruit, his Netflix spy series starring Noah Centineo. The show was recently cancelled after two seasons, but Hawley previously floated the idea of a movie to give the character Owen Hendricks a proper sendoff.

When asked if that film is moving forward, Hawley responded: “I think it’s still early days… I still am passionate about that world and the story, and would love to revisit at some point.”

Adding to the intrigue, fans of The Rookie have noticed the frequent use of the phrase “chaos agent” in recent episodes—a term used to describe Owen in The Recruit. Hawley admitted the connection isn’t accidental, and even revealed that “Chaos Agent” was once considered as a possible title for The Recruit before Netflix’s The Night Agent took priority.

Despite The Recruit’s cancellation, Hawley’s world-building continues. Nathan Fillion and Felix Solis—both tied to The Rookie universe—had crossover roles in The Recruit, hinting at a shared narrative DNA between the two series.

For now, fans will have to wait for more updates on both fronts—but it’s clear that Hawley hasn’t finished exploring these connected universes.
