For most of February, The Roots have been absent from The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, leading to questions about whether they had a falling out with the host or if their time with the show was over. However, it turns out the band’s departure is only temporary.
Why Did The Roots Leave?
The Roots have taken time off in February to prepare for their role in the upcoming SNL 50th Anniversary Concert, scheduled for February 14.
This concert will feature performances from major music stars, including Lady Gaga, Mumford & Sons, and more. Paul Shaffer, the long-time musical director for Late Show With David Letterman, has stepped in as a temporary bandleader during The Roots’ absence.
Will The Roots Ever Leave The Tonight Show?
After nearly two decades working together, it seems unlikely that The Roots will permanently leave The Tonight Show.
Fallon is committed to hosting the show at least until 2028, meaning The Roots are expected to continue their contributions for the foreseeable future.
The band balances their late-night work with other creative projects, such as Questlove’s directing career, which includes movies like Summer of Soul and a documentary on Sly and the Family Stone.
Despite the hiatus, fans can expect The Roots to return to The Tonight Show stage soon, keeping their longstanding partnership with Fallon intact.
