Former Rockstar Games and Grand Theft Auto 5 animator Mike York has told Covers.com he’s disappointed to learn GTA 6 will be region-locked for PlayStation users, especially considering players can no longer obtain a physical disc of the game.
“The region-lock announcement is really messy because if you live in one continent, buy the game, and your life changes for whatever reason and you have to relocate, you can’t play the game in your new location. It’s really disappointing.
“I don’t think it’s necessarily the Rockstar developers’ fault; I imagine it’s a governmental decision taken to stop people from playing the game overseas, for whatever reason, but what a garbage policy!
“This shows the importance of physical discs and why they can be really valuable. You should be able to play your purchased games wherever you are.
“As much as the region-lock news is a disappointment, I don’t think it will have any impact on sales. For instance, if Rockstar decided to only make the game available on PlayStation, millions of people would buy a PlayStation just to play GTA 6; the game is far too big and anticipated for there to be an effect on game sales.”
