The Nice Guys Writer Talks About the Possibility of a Sequel and Why It Faces Many Financial Obstacles

Shane Black, the writer and director of The Nice Guys, recently spoke about the chances of a sequel to the 2016 buddy comedy. He explained that making a follow-up film faces many challenges, mostly because the rights to the movie are split among several studios and producers. This makes it hard to get everyone to agree on funding a new movie.

Black also mentioned that the original stars, Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling, would need higher pay to return. This adds more costs and makes the project financially risky. He said studios might hesitate to invest more money since the first film did not do very well in theaters.

Despite these difficulties, Black has thought about the story for a sequel. He shared that the plan was to have the two main characters go to Mexico for a new adventure. He believes the story could be built around the characters rather than just the plot, similar to classic detective stories.

Black said he still hopes to write the sequel someday with his co-writer Anthony. He also mentioned that some executives at Warner Bros. might support the idea, but others, including the company’s CEO, may block it because of the first movie’s box office results.

For now, fans can enjoy The Nice Guys re-released on 4K Blu-ray or streaming on Paramount+. However, there is no official announcement about a sequel moving forward.
