Spotify has become the first major app to let users pay for subscriptions outside Apple’s payment system.

Apple approved Spotify’s update that allows US users to see pricing information and direct links to external payment options.

    Breaking Down Apple’s Walls

The update comes after a court order in Apple’s ongoing legal battle with Epic Games forced the tech giant to change its rules about external payments.

Previously, Apple blocked apps from directing users to outside payment methods and charged high fees on transactions.

    What’s New in the Update

Version 9.0.40 of Spotify’s iPhone app now displays promotional pricing and subscription plans available on Spotify’s website. By paying directly through Spotify, users can avoid Apple’s 30% service charge on in-app payments.

    Spotify Celebrates the Win

“In a victory for consumers, artists, creators, and authors, Apple has approved Spotify’s U.S. app update,” said Spotify spokesperson Jeanne Moran.

“After nearly a decade, this will finally allow us to freely show clear pricing information and links to purchase, fostering transparency and choice for U.S. consumers.”

    More Changes Coming

The court ordered Apple to end all fees, design restrictions, and warning pop-ups for external payments. Patreon has announced it will submit a similar update, and Epic Games is developing its own payment system with lower fees than Apple’s.

    Availability

The updated app is rolling out now, though Spotify notes it may take some time for the new payment options to appear on all devices.
