The New York Knicks are NBA champions. The team defeated the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 on Saturday to win the series four games to one. This victory ended a 53-year championship drought for New York.
Famous movie director and Knicks superfan Spike Lee celebrated the win on the court. Later that night, he sent a video message to NBA legend Michael Jordan. Lee channeled his famous “Mars Blackmon” character from their old Nike commercials.
“Mike, it’s Mars Blackmon,” Lee said in the video. “We haven’t talked in a minute. The New York Knicks are world champions. Call me back!”
The message was a playful jab at a historic rivalry. During the 1980s and 1990s, Jordan and the Chicago Bulls constantly defeated the Knicks in the playoffs. Jordan won 19 out of 27 playoff games against New York.
Now, those past heartbreaks are over for New York fans. All-Star guard Jalen Brunson won the Finals MVP award after leading the Knicks to a dominant 16-3 record in the playoffs. The victory brings ultimate joy back to the Big Apple.
