Paramount has confirmed that there will be no second season of Dexter: Original Sin, the prequel series that debuted in December 2024 and concluded in February 2025. Although a renewal had been previously announced, production on a second season never began.
The series, set in 1991, explored the early life of Dexter Morgan. Patrick Gibson played the young Dexter, with Michael C. Hall providing the character’s inner monologue.
The cast also featured Christina Milian, Christian Slater, Molly Brown, Alex Shimizu, Reno Wilson, Patrick Dempsey, and Sarah Michelle Gellar. Clyde Phillips returned as showrunner, and Hall served as an executive producer.
While Original Sin will not continue, Paramount is planning to open a writers room for a second season of Dexter: Resurrection. The series, starring Michael C. Hall, premiered on 11 July 2025 and has received positive reviews, drawing 4.4 million multiplatform viewers in its first week and achieving a 94% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The decision follows the recent Skydance-Paramount merger, with new leadership at Showtime and Paramount Television Studios prioritising the continuation of the Dexter franchise through Resurrection.
Showtime has reduced its scripted slate in recent years, now focusing on select premium content, including The Chi, The Agency, Yellowjackets, and Dexter: Resurrection.
