Overwatch 2 Director Hints at Shifting Balance Toward Fun and Power

In a recent interview with GamesRadar+, Aaron Keller, the director of Overwatch 2, shared his thoughts on the game’s evolving balance between fun and fairness. He reflected on the chaotic and often broken nature of the original Overwatch launch, noting that while those “overpowered” moments were thrilling, they also came with some significant lows.

Keller explained that Overwatch 2 has made great strides in creating a more balanced competitive environment, but the team recognizes that the fun of Overwatch often came from the chaos and powerful moments in the game.

While the team doesn’t want to return to the “chaos” of the original game, Keller admitted that they are exploring ways to bring back some of that excitement. He emphasized the balance between fun and fair gameplay, suggesting that the new perk system could address this by allowing players to adjust their heroes in the middle of a match, changing their play style and abilities for more impactful moments.

The introduction of modes like Stadium—a new format with elements reminiscent of Counter-Strike—will give players the chance to experiment with new currencies and items, increasing the overall excitement and reward for players who perform well.

Keller noted that while the game will remain competitive and fair, there will be times when rewards may favor the more skilled players, creating a sense of impact over the course of a match.

“We don’t want to go all the way back to Overwatch 1, but we are shifting in that direction,” Keller said. This indicates that while Overwatch 2 will maintain its current balance, the team is moving toward a future where moments of power and big plays take center stage once again.
