Netflix’s popular action franchise Extraction is expanding with a new television series, set to begin filming in December 2025. The eight-episode spin-off will star French actor Omar Sy and will be directed in part by veteran TV director Louise Hooper.

Netflix first announced the spin-off series in February 2025, following the success of the Extraction films starring Chris Hemsworth. The original Extraction movie became a major streaming hit when it debuted in 2020 during the pandemic, with a sequel released in 2023.

Production for the new series was initially expected to start in September 2025, but it has now been pushed back to December. Filming will continue into mid-2026. Part of the series will be shot in Morocco, continuing the franchise’s tradition of international filming locations. Previous Extraction films were shot in India, Thailand, Australia, and the Czech Republic.

    New Creative Team

Louise Hooper, known for her work on Netflix’s The Witcher, The Sandman, and Treason, will direct several episodes of the new series. Hooper has also directed episodes of Rings of Power, Inside No. 9, and Flesh & Blood.

The series will be overseen by Glen Mazzara, who will serve as writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Mazzara is well-known for his previous roles in shows like The Walking Dead.

Omar Sy, the lead actor of the new Extraction series, recently starred in the action film Shadow Force and is currently filming season 4 of Lupin.

    Story Details

According to the official synopsis, the series will follow Sy’s character, a mercenary on a dangerous mission to rescue hostages in Libya. The show will explore emotional struggles, trauma, and moral dilemmas faced by characters caught between rival factions and ruthless enemies.

The Russo brothers—Anthony and Joe Russo—along with Angela Russo-Otstot, Scott Nemes, and Chris Castaldi, will executive produce the series through their production company AGBO. Sam Hargrave, who directed the first two Extraction films, will also serve as an executive producer.

The status of Extraction 3 remains unclear. In October 2024, Joe Russo confirmed that development for the third film was underway, with plans to begin production in 2025. It is not yet known how the spin-off series will affect the timeline of the third movie.
