Netflix and Sony have officially confirmed a sequel to the hit animated film KPop Demon Hunters, which first premiered in 2025. The follow-up is scheduled for release in 2029 and marks the start of Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans’ new multi-year deal with Netflix for writing and directing animation projects.

The first film follows a fictional K-pop girl group—Rumi, Mira, and Zoey—who secretly fight demons threatening the world, balancing their lives as music stars and heroes. The sequel will continue their story, though specific plot details have not yet been revealed. Appelhans promised fans that the creative team is excited to develop the next chapter and watch the characters evolve.

The original film became Netflix’s most popular movie of all time, attracting a global audience and even seeing box office success during special theater sing-along events. It has also been nominated for Oscars for Best Animated Feature and Original Song for “Golden.”

Netflix and Sony executives praised Kang and Appelhans for breaking cultural barriers and building a global fandom. Netflix’s chief content officer, Bela Bajaria, said the duo “ignited a global fandom that crossed languages, generations, and genres.” Sony Pictures Animation’s leadership added that they are thrilled to help expand the universe in the next chapter.

Fans of the franchise can expect the sequel to build on the original’s unique mix of music, adventure, and supernatural battles while exploring the world and characters more deeply.
