James Gunn has revealed why Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be the second film in the DC Universe (DCU) after Superman: Legacy.
Starring Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) as Kara Zor-El, the movie will explore the story of Superman’s older cousin.
Gunn credits the decision to Ana Nogueira’s exceptional script, calling it the “best option” among the DCU projects in development.
Gunn emphasised that the DCU’s direction prioritises quality over building a grand interconnected narrative.
He explained, “We will never sacrifice the present for the future,” adding that films must have strong, ready scripts before moving forward. This approach ensures adaptability in the evolving DCU.
The confirmed cast includes Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills and Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is set for release on June 26, 2026, following Superman: Legacy on July 11, 2025.
Gunn’s comments highlight a shift in the superhero genre, focusing on individual stories rather than expansive universes.
This decision positions Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow as a key film in establishing the DCU’s tone and narrative depth.
