Microsoft has acknowledged a known issue affecting Windows 11 version 24H2, where users are unable to install new security updates if they installed the OS using media like CD or USB.
The issue impacts installations with the October 2024 (KB5044284) and November 2024 (KB5046617) Patch Tuesday updates.
The problem arises when users attempt to install updates on systems where Windows 11 24H2 was installed using media containing these updates.
This issue does not occur when the installation is done through Windows Update or the Microsoft Update Catalog website.
Workaround and Solution
Microsoft suggests avoiding the installation of Windows 11 24H2 with the October or November 2024 security updates if using USB or CD media.
Instead, users should ensure that their installation media includes the December 2024 security update (released December 10, 2024) or later. The December Patch Tuesday update is not affected by this issue.
The company is investigating the problem and will provide more details in the future. For more information, users can check the issue on Microsoft’s official Windows Health dashboard.
