The animated character known as Lofi Girl, a symbol of focus and calm for millions around the world, has officially graduated after eight years of non-stop studying on YouTube.
The announcement marks the end of an era for the globally popular livestream “lofi hip hop radio – beats to relax/study to.” The stream, which features lo-fi music and a looping animation of Jade studying in her bedroom, has been running since 2015. It gained massive popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic as a go-to source of ambient music for students and remote workers.
Jade was introduced in 2018 after the channel, originally called ChilledCow, was forced to stop using footage from a Studio Ghibli film. The new character, designed by Colombian artist Juan Pablo Machado, quickly became a cultural icon.
The graduation sparked emotional reactions on social media. YouTube’s TikTok account commented, “girl congratulations and we MEAN THAT,” while Duolingo Brazil called it the “End of an era.” Fans shared memories of long study sessions accompanied by the channel’s calming music.
Despite the graduation, the livestream remains active. Jade has returned to her desk in a new animation, now seen writing in a notebook instead of studying. This suggests the stream will continue in its familiar format.
The channel has not confirmed if new characters, such as a rumored figure named “Tiago,” will appear in the future. However, previous additions like Synthwave Boy and short animated stories suggest the channel is open to expanding its storytelling.
Lofi Girl currently has over 15 million subscribers. The channel operates its own label, Lofi Records, which releases music that creators can use without copyright issues.
The graduation video ends a chapter for Jade but leaves fans wondering what’s next. For now, it’s business as usual on the 24/7 livestream.
