Lawsuit Claims Amazon Slowed Deliveries to Low-Income D.C. Neighborhoods

Amazon is facing a lawsuit for allegedly slowing deliveries to two low-income neighborhoods in Washington, D.C.

Despite residents paying for Prime memberships, the company reportedly stopped using its own delivery service in June 2022 for ZIP codes 20019 and 20020, causing slower deliveries.

According to the lawsuit filed by Attorney General Brian Schwalb, Amazon outsourced deliveries to UPS and the U.S. Postal Service in these areas, leading to significant delays.

Before the change, over 72% of Prime packages were delivered within two days. Afterward, only 25% and 24% of deliveries in these neighborhoods were on time.

Schwalb claims Amazon misled customers by not informing them about the slower service and is seeking damages, penalties, and an end to the deceptive practices. Amazon denies the allegations, citing safety concerns for delivery drivers in those areas.

The lawsuit highlights ongoing concerns about Amazon’s treatment of low-income neighborhoods, with similar accusations dating back to 2016.
