Hollywood drama is heating up as past tweets from actress Karla Sofía Gascón resurface, including harsh words about her Emilia Pérez co-star Selena Gomez.
In a now-deleted 2022 post on X (formerly Twitter), Gascón referred to Gomez as a “rich rat” and accused her of playing the role of a victim while continuing to involve herself in her ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber’s life. The tweet also referenced Bieber’s wife, Hailey Bieber.
At the time of the post, Gascón was already set to work with Gomez on Emilia Pérez, a film that has since earned 13 Oscar nominations.
Past Tweets Spark Backlash
Gascón has also been criticized for other controversial social media posts. In several deleted tweets, she made offensive remarks about Islam, calling the religion an “infection” and claiming it is incompatible with Western values. She also made derogatory comments about Muslim women wearing burkas.
As backlash grew, actress Zoe Saldaña publicly condemned Gascón’s comments, with many calling them racist and xenophobic.
Gascón Responds to the Controversy
Facing mounting criticism, Gascón issued an apology through People on January 30, stating:
“As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain.”
She later addressed the backlash again on Instagram, claiming her words were taken out of context. She also told The Hollywood Reporter that she is the target of a “campaign of hate and misinformation” and has since deactivated her X account.
Selena Gomez has not yet responded to the controversy.
