The John Wick action franchise has become a beloved hit, with fans worldwide clamoring for more of Keanu Reeves as the unstoppable assassin Baba Yaga. After the shockingly somber ending of John Wick 4 in March 2023, many were left wondering if we’d seen the last of Mr. Wick.

In November 2023, Lionsgate’s Joe Drake also teased they had started work on a fifth Wick film before having to pause during the writers’ strike. With the strike over, those wheels are turning again.

What Could the John Wick 5 Plot Be?

The biggest question is how the franchise could continue after John supposedly met his demise at the end of Chapter 4. One possibility is that his death was faked, setting up new adventures.

Alternatively, John Wick 5 could be a prequel exploring the character’s backstory and introducing new characters to carry the franchise forward. Flashbacks to John’s past have provided some of the most compelling worldbuilding in previous films.

Who Could Be in the John Wick 5 Cast?

If it’s a sequel, Keanu Reeves would likely need to return as the titular assassin unless they’re truly passing the baton. But his involvement seems plausible if they reveal John is still alive.

A prequel film could feature a fresh cast taking the spotlight, with Reeves potentially making cameo appearances. Or it could recast a younger actor as John with Reeves on the sidelines.

When Could John Wick 5 Release?

No date is set, but with the project seemingly still in relatively early development phases, industry insiders don’t expect John Wick 5 until 2026 at the absolute earliest. The franchise’s commitment to intricately choreographed action means a lengthy post-production period.
