James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film will feature the iconic red trunks, a decision that took some deliberation.
During a recent Q&A about the film’s teaser trailer, Gunn revealed that he consulted with Zack Snyder, the director of previous Superman films like Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, about the costume.
Gunn explained that he went back and forth on the inclusion of the red trunks. He spoke to Snyder, who had previously avoided the trunks in his films.
Snyder shared that he had experimented with many versions but never felt the trunks worked.
However, Gunn’s conversation with lead actor David Corenswet convinced him to include the trunks, as a way to make Superman feel more approachable, especially for children.
Gunn noted that Corenswet was enthusiastic about the colorful look, which ultimately led to the trunks being part of the final design.
The film, set to release on July 11, 2025, will also feature a stellar cast including Rachel Brosnahan, Isabela Merced, Nathan Fillion, and Nicholas Hoult, among others.
This film marks the beginning of the DC Universe’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, which will feature a mix of movies and TV shows, including projects like The Brave and the Bold and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
