Indie PS5 Shooter Hypercharge Goes Viral After Devs Admit Game Was “Dead”

A small indie shooter, Hypercharge: Unboxed, has surged to the top of the PS5 bestseller list thanks to a viral, heartfelt message from its developers.

Despite launching with almost no active players, the game is now sitting at #5 in bestselling new releases, with thousands picking it up in support of the creators.

The game, where you play as action figures in a toy-themed world, first launched on Steam in 2020 and was praised for its creativity and charm.

However, when it released on Xbox and PlayStation in late May 2025, interest was initially very low—players even reported struggling to fill a full online match, claiming there were only “five people online.”

In response, developers Digital Cybercherries, a team of just five people, openly acknowledged the game’s limited player base in a sincere social media post. Instead of making excuses, they said they were proud to have built something meaningful.

“To us, being rich means waking up every day to do what we love,” they wrote. “As long as we can pay the bills and keep creating, we’re already rich.”

That message exploded online, with over 600,000 views, and fans rallied behind the studio. The game quickly rose into PS5’s top 10 seller list, briefly going viral.

The devs say they never intended for Hypercharge to compete with online shooters like Fortnite, instead focusing on a co-op experience that could be played offline or locally with friends.

Marketing head Joe Henson called the whole experience “surreal”, noting the game was made without a publisher, funding, or marketing team—just five friends chasing a dream.

While it’s unclear how long the momentum will last, the sudden boost proves that authenticity and passion can still resonate in an industry dominated by blockbusters.

Hypercharge: Unboxed is currently available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
