The investigation into the tragic death of Liam Payne, former member of One Direction, has led to charges against five individuals.
Payne, who was just 31 years old, passed away on October 16, 2024, after falling from the third floor of his hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was in the city to support his former bandmate Niall Horan on tour.
Among those charged are a hotel employee and a waiter, both accused of supplying cocaine to Payne. Reports indicate the hotel employee provided the drug on two occasions, including the day of the singer’s death, while the waiter allegedly supplied it twice on October 14.
A chief receptionist has been charged with manslaughter for reportedly instructing three people to “drag” Payne to his hotel room, where the fatal fall occurred.
A hotel manager also faces manslaughter charges due to the hazardous condition of the balcony, which was deemed a serious safety threat. Prosecutors argue the manager failed to ensure Payne was taken to a safe place until medical assistance could arrive.
Additionally, a close friend of Payne has been charged with manslaughter for allegedly abandoning him, despite knowing his struggles with addiction and his inability to fend for himself.
Judge Laura Bruniard, who is presiding over the case, stated that while the accused did not intend to cause Payne’s death, their actions created a significant risk to his life.
A toxicology report from November revealed that Payne had a mixture of cocaine, alcohol, and anti-depressants in his system at the time of his death.
The news of Payne’s passing shocked fans worldwide. His former bandmates—Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson—joined Simon Cowell and Cheryl Tweedy, Payne’s ex-partner, at his funeral.
Cheryl, who is also the mother of Payne’s seven-year-old son Bear, shared a heartfelt statement on social media.
She expressed her grief and concern for their son, stating, “It breaks my heart further that I cannot shield him from the media exploitation of this tragedy.”
