Google Plans to Bring Google TV to Low-End TVs with Less RAM

Google is planning to bring Google TV to cheaper TVs with low RAM, partnering with select manufacturers to launch these budget-friendly models. This move aims to make Google TV available to more people by targeting “low RAM panel TVs.”

However, experts warn that low-end Google TVs may face performance problems within a year or two. Past attempts with low-RAM devices like the Chromecast with Google TV (HD), which had 1.5GB of RAM and 8GB of storage, showed slowdowns and storage issues after a short time. Google had to release multiple updates to fix these problems.

Despite this history, Google seems ready to repeat the same approach. With future Google TV updates and new features, memory and RAM requirements will only increase, making low-end hardware less suitable over time.

Many believe that instead of lowering hardware requirements, Google should set a higher minimum standard for Google TVs to ensure smooth and consistent performance for several years.

Google’s recent Google TV Streamer device shows how better hardware — like 4GB RAM and 32GB storage — helps deliver a smoother experience. But expanding Google TV to budget TVs with less powerful specs might result in slower and less reliable devices in the future.

In summary, Google’s goal to reach more users with affordable Google TVs is clear, but the company risks repeating past performance issues by pushing the platform on low-end hardware.
