Global Box Office Set for $12.4B Summer Thanks to Major Blockbusters

The global box office is on track to reach $12.4 billion this summer, according to Gower Street Analytics. If that happens, it would be the second-biggest summer box office since the pandemic, just behind 2023’s $13.6 billion. The summer season runs from May 1 to August 31.

Ticket sales outside of China are also expected to hit $6.3 billion, close to post-Covid records. In North America alone, the summer box office is expected to reach $4.2 billion, the highest since 2019. That’s 15% higher than last year and 5% higher than 2023.

Major blockbusters are helping drive these numbers. A Minecraft Movie is already at $953.5 million worldwide and could soon pass the $1 billion mark. Disney’s Lilo & Stitch is close behind at $864 million and is also expected to hit that milestone.

Other big releases coming this summer include Jurassic World Rebirth, F1: The Movie, Superman, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, The Naked Gun, The Bad Guys 2, and Warner Bros.’ horror movie Weapons.

Europe’s box office is also seeing strong growth. Italy’s box office is up 17%, Spain has surged, and Germany has grown by 1.2%. The UK got a major boost from Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy. More success is expected with the release of 28 Years Later and Elio.

Overall, the global box office for 2025 has reached $12.86 billion so far, up 7.4% from last year. Despite challenges in China’s market, most regions are reporting growth.

This is good news for movie theaters and studios as they continue to recover from pandemic losses. With more big movies still on the way, 2025 could finish as one of the biggest years for the box office in recent memory.
