Denis Villeneuve credits his experience working with cinematographer Roger Deakins on Blade Runner 2049 for shaping his approach to the visual effects in Dune.

Speaking on The Town podcast, Villeneuve described how daily collaborations with Deakins taught him key VFX techniques, especially regarding light, contrast, and density.

Although Deakins didn’t work on Dune, his influence is clear in the films’ breathtaking visuals.

Dune won Academy Awards for Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects, and Dune: Part Two is expected to follow suit.

Villeneuve’s deep understanding of visual storytelling, learned from Deakins, brought Herbert’s desert world and sandworms to life in ways that stayed true to the source material.
