Controversy Grows as VAR Audio Reveals Officials’ Reactions in Barcelona vs Real Madrid

Barcelona’s recent match against Real Madrid has caused new controversy after VAR audio from two major decisions was made public. The audio has led fans to question the fairness of refereeing in La Liga.

One major incident involved Ferran Torres, whose shot in the box appeared to hit the arm of Real Madrid’s Aurélien Tchouaméni. Referee Hernández Hernández reviewed the play but decided not to give a penalty.

In the audio, the VAR team told the referee: “There you have the images, it’s a shot on goal. You don’t have many more cameras.”
The referee replied: “Courtois is behind, the impact occurs with the arm down, for me it is not a penalty.”

Another controversial moment came when Fermín López scored a goal that was later disallowed for a handball in the build-up. The decision itself was questioned, but it was a comment during the review that sparked the most outrage.

The VAR audio captured this exchange:

“Martínez Munuera: Listen to me. We just detected a hand, okay? Come see it, please.”
Unknown voice: With the height, thank goodness. Yes, yes, absolutely.”
Hernández Hernández: Okay, perfect. Go ahead, it hits his hand, yes… I’m going to cancel the goal.”

The phrase “thank goodness” has upset many Barcelona supporters. They believe it shows relief at finding a reason to cancel the goal, which has raised concerns about possible bias in decision-making.

As of now, La Liga and the refereeing body have not responded, but fans are already demanding answers.
