Gen Z Invents New Insult That Could Ruin Your Day: “Choppelganger” Explained

Gen Z has added a new insult to its growing lexicon, and it’s not something you want to be called. The word? “Choppelganger.”

Much like past generational slang — think “YOLO,” “bae,” or “adulting” — this term is designed to confuse anyone outside the age group. It’s quickly gaining traction on platforms like TikTok, where users apply it to describe unfortunate comparisons.

So what does it mean? “Choppelganger” combines “chopped” and “doppelganger.” In Gen Z terms, “chopped” refers to someone being unattractive, while a doppelganger is someone who looks nearly identical to another person. Put together, a choppelganger is essentially the uglier version of someone else.

For example, calling someone “Sydney Sweeney’s choppelganger” would imply they resemble the actress, but in a less flattering way.

The term first appeared online in a comment under a video of someone resembling Kendrick Lamar: “My dyslexic a* read this as ‘choppelganger’ and I think I just made a word for someone who looks like u but very slightly and subtly worse.”*

Since then, it has spread across social media, with users hunting for “celebrity choppelgangers” or friends who look like someone more genetically fortunate.

As one TikTok user put it: “Everyone has a choppelganger it’s like someone who almost looks like you but chopped. Or maybe you’re someone’s choppelganger idk. Food for thought.”

While it may sting to be labeled a choppelganger, at least the term makes slightly more sense than most Gen Alpha slang.
