Ben Schwartz, the voice of Sonic the Hedgehog, recently shared exciting details about the future of the Sonic movie franchise.
In an interview, Schwartz teased the upcoming Sonic 4, slated for release in 2027, and hinted at a potential crossover with Mario in a Super Smash Bros. movie.
In Sonic 3, Schwartz was joined by Keanu Reeves as Shadow, Sonic’s dark and brooding counterpart, and Idris Elba as Knuckles.
Despite working alongside these stars in voiceover booths, Schwartz revealed that he didn’t meet them in person until the London premiere.
He shared that his recording process is intense, often requiring him to physically act out Sonicโs movements to make the performance feel more authentic.
Schwartz also discussed the evolving nature of the Sonic films, with each installment taking on a different genre.
Sonic 3 brings in a darker tone with Shadow, and Schwartz hinted that Sonic 4 could explore new, exciting storylines and characters. He expressed his hope that the film would feature a significant shift in tone, while still staying true to the heart of Sonicโs character.
The idea of a Super Smash Bros. crossover movie also intrigued Schwartz, who expressed excitement at the possibility of a battle royale-style film featuring beloved video game characters.
He noted that the success of films like Pikachu and the upcoming Legend of Zelda movie could bring this dream closer to reality, although it would require collaboration between multiple studios.
As for Schwartzโs comedy career, he shared that heโs been working on new projects, including a special titled Ben Schwartz and Friends, which has sold out venues like Radio City Music Hall and the Sydney Opera House. He teased exciting developments for the special, with plans to share more details soon.
With Sonic 4 on the horizon and the potential for a Super Smash Bros. crossover, Schwartzโs journey as Sonic is far from over.
Fans can look forward to more adventures with the blue hedgehog and possibly even a wider video game universe coming to life on the big screen.
