Another Disney Plus Series Cancelled as Marvel Shifts TV Priorities

Marvel Studios has officially cancelled the much-anticipated Okoye series for Disney Plus, marking another casualty in the studio’s evolving approach to television projects.

The news was confirmed by Brad Winderbaum, Marvel’s Head of Television, Streaming, and Animation, during press interviews for the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again.

Winderbaum revealed that while the Okoye series will not proceed, fans can still expect to see Danai Gurira reprise her role as Okoye in future MCU projects.

However, he remained tight-lipped about when or where the character would return. This cancellation is part of Marvel’s new strategy to prioritize grounded, long-running TV shows over high-budget, six-episode mini-series.

Okoye, the fierce general of Wakanda’s Dora Milaje, made her MCU debut in Black Panther (2018) and appeared in Avengers: Infinity War, Endgame, and Wakanda Forever.

The planned series was expected to explore Wakanda’s hidden stories, but now it seems Okoye’s next appearance may come in Black Panther 3 or the upcoming Avengers films.

Marvel’s shift in television strategy follows a wave of underwhelming box office performances from films like Eternals and Quantumania, along with the poor reception of shows like Secret Invasion.

The studio is now focused on producing more traditional, long-running TV series, with Agatha All Along and Daredevil: Born Again serving as the new blueprint for future Marvel Television projects.
