Acclaimed filmmaker Denis Villeneuve has officially been named the director of the next James Bond movie, marking a major shift in the iconic franchise’s future.

Amazon MGM Studios announced the news on June 25, 2025, confirming that Villeneuve will also serve as executive producer alongside Tanya Lapointe.

Best known for directing Dune and Blade Runner 2049, Villeneuve is known for his rich visuals and thoughtful storytelling. He called the Bond character “sacred territory” and promised to honor the legacy while paving the way for new stories. “This is a massive responsibility,” he said, “but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honor.”

This will be the 26th official James Bond film and the first since Amazon took creative control of the franchise after acquiring MGM. It also marks a major change from the Broccoli family’s longtime oversight of Bond films.

Amy Pascal and David Heyman are producing, but no screenwriter or lead actor has been announced yet. Daniel Craig’s era as 007 ended with No Time to Die in 2021, and speculation about the next Bond continues.

Fans and critics see Villeneuve’s hiring as a bold move. Many online called it a “Holy Shit” moment, reflecting the excitement around his fresh vision for the franchise. Studio executives praised him as a “cinematic master” and said they are eager to see how he will reinvent 007.

There are no plot or casting details yet, but Villeneuve’s involvement points to a more cinematic and serious direction for James Bond’s future.
