Who or What is Behind the ‘Safeguard’ in ‘Silo’ Season 2, Episode 9?

In Silo Season 2, Episode 9, tensions in both silos reach a boiling point as Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson) prepares to return outside, and Lukas Kyle (Avi Nash), the newly promoted head of IT shadow, uncovers a chilling secret.

Lukas has been trying to crack a code left by the previous head of IT, Salvador Quinn, and in this episode, he finally does. The code leads Lukas to a hidden tunnel at the bottom of the silo, where he hears a robotic voice address him by name.

The voice reveals that only three people have reached this door before: Quinn, Judge Meadows (Tanya Moodie), and George Wilkins.

The voice then issues a grave warning: if Lukas speaks to anyone about what he has seen or heard, they will “initiate the safeguard.” Lukas nervously acknowledges that he understands what the safeguard is.

Who is the Voice?

The identity of the voice remains unclear, but it may belong to someone with higher authority over the silos.

It could be the head of IT from another silo, possibly with control over all 51 silos. Alternatively, the voice might belong to an artificial intelligence that oversees the entire system.

What is the Safeguard?

The “safeguard” is a mysterious and ominous threat. If Lukas reveals what he’s learned, the safeguard will be triggered. While its exact nature is unknown, it is clear that it is not meant to protect the inhabitants of Silo 18.

The safeguard could be a measure to maintain control over the silos, especially if Silo 18 starts to rebel or uncover too many secrets.

As the mystery deepens, Lukas’ discovery points to a larger conspiracy within the silos, and the safeguard may be the key to understanding why the system exists in the first place.
