Hailee Steinfeld has made a surprising return to the MCU in a way no one expected. After her debut in Hawkeye and a brief cameo in The Marvels, Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop is back, but this time, it’s through animation in What If…? Season 3.
In the sixth episode of What If…? titled “What If…1872?”, Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop teams up with Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi.
The episode transports them to the Old West, where Kate, instead of wielding a bow and arrow, is riding horseback and using a revolver. Despite the drastic change in setting, she still sports her signature purple and black color palette.
Set in 1872, Kate is on a mission to avenge her family’s death at the hands of the Hood, while Shang-Chi is searching for his sister, Xu Xialing.
The two cross paths and soon find a young boy named Kwai Jun-Fan, who reveals that the Hood has taken Chinese immigrants captive on a train, where they are being brainwashed by Sonny Burch.
This unexpected twist in What If…? brings a fresh take on Kate Bishop, blending her familiar heroism with a completely different historical backdrop.
Fans are excited to see how this version of Kate Bishop evolves in the Multiverse.
