YouTube’s New AI Features Let You Skip to the Best Parts of Any Video

YouTube is introducing two major AI features to help users find and understand video content more efficiently.

While Google has been adding AI to its apps and services, YouTube has largely stayed out of the AI revolution until now. The video platform announced these new features will roll out to US users first.

    AI Search Carousel

The first feature is an AI-powered search results carousel that shows video highlights and suggestions directly on search pages.

    How it works:

    • Shows highlighted clips from videos related to your search
    • Each video gets a title and description explaining the context
    • Tap thumbnails to jump directly into full videos
    • Browse additional video suggestions below results

YouTube provided this example: “Imagine searching for ‘best beaches in Hawaii’ — you could see an AI-generated carousel highlighting clips from videos showcasing the best snorkel spots and volcanic beaches, complete with descriptions and more videos to plan your ideal day.”

This feature makes it easier to find specific information without watching entire videos.

    Ask AI Button

The second feature is a conversational AI tool accessed through an “Ask” button on videos.

    What you can do:

    • Ask questions about what’s happening in the video
    • Request summaries of lengthy videos when you’re in a rush
    • Get explanations of complex topics covered in the content
    • Ask follow-up questions about the video

The AI draws information from both YouTube’s database and the broader web to provide comprehensive answers.

    Availability and Access

    AI Search Carousel:

    • Available only to YouTube Premium subscribers
    • Rolling out first in the United States

    Ask AI Button:

    • Available to all YouTube users (including non-Premium)
    • Also launching first in the US
    • Will appear in the YouTube interface soon

    Why This Matters

These AI features address common YouTube frustrations:

    • Finding specific information in long videos
    • Getting quick summaries without watching entire content
    • Discovering relevant clips from search results
    • Understanding complex video topics

The tools could significantly change how people consume YouTube content, making it more searchable and accessible.

    YouTube’s AI Strategy

This marks YouTube’s entry into the AI enhancement race that other Google services have already joined.

The features show YouTube is focusing on:

    • Improved content discovery
    • Better user experience for information seeking
    • Premium subscriber benefits
    • Conversational AI integration

Users in the US can expect to see these features rolling out gradually, with the Ask button appearing first for all users, followed by the search carousel for Premium subscribers.

The AI additions represent YouTube’s biggest interface update in recent years and could set the stage for more AI-powered features across the platform.
