In the upcoming Netflix documentary Avicii – I’m Tim, the late DJ Tim Bergling, known as Avicii, poignantly narrates his own tragic journey, revealing the intense duality he faced between his public persona and his private struggles.
The film, set to release on December 31, 2024, explores the inner turmoil that led to his untimely death by suicide in 2018. Bergling’s own words capture the heartbreaking conflict: “I didn’t like having to be Avicii, and then having to be Tim.”
The documentary delves into the profound emptiness he felt despite his fame, with Bergling admitting, “I started feeling kind of very empty and unhappy. So I was just on autopilot mode.”
Director Henrik Burman spent countless hours combing through private archival footage, family tapes, and audio recordings to create an intimate portrait of the artist. The film also includes personal moments, such as ultrasound scans and childhood memories, offering a rare and emotional glimpse into Avicii’s life.
The documentary also highlights the emotional toll of the music industry on Bergling, with his father, Klas, recalling a painful intervention when his son’s struggles became impossible to ignore. “It was excruciatingly painful to see the look in his eyes,” Klas said.
The film explores the connection between Avicii’s haunting lyrics and his mental health. Aloe Blacc, who collaborated with Avicii on the song “SOS,” reflects on the lyrics, “Can you hear me? SOS / Help me put my mind to rest,” which now serve as a chilling cry for help. Blacc expressed regret at receiving this “letter” from Bergling too late.
Featuring interviews with Avicii’s collaborators, including David Guetta, Chris Martin, and his former manager Arash Pournouri, Avicii – I’m Tim offers a deeply personal and emotional look at the DJ’s life and legacy.
