Taiwan Semiconductor and Others Hit Hard as DeepSeek AI Model Shakes Market

Shares of major AI hardware companies, including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC), Marvell Technology (MRVL), and Arista Networks (ANET), saw sharp declines on Monday, with drops of 13.33%, 19.10%, and 22.35%, respectively.

This sell-off was triggered by the release of DeepSeek’s DeepSeek V3 R1, a new AI reasoning model from a little-known Chinese lab.

DeepSeek’s Model Disrupts AI Hardware Expectations

DeepSeek’s V3 R1 model has demonstrated performance on par with OpenAI’s latest model, o1, but at a fraction of the cost. The breakthrough was achieved despite trade restrictions on advanced AI GPUs, using innovative methods that greatly reduced the computing power needed.

This development has raised concerns that companies like Taiwan Semiconductor, which produce high-end processors for AI, may face reduced demand as AI infrastructure costs decrease.

The news caused a significant pullback in AI hardware stocks, many of which were previously trading at high valuations based on expected future growth.

Marvell and Arista Networks, which produce AI chips and data center networking equipment, respectively, were particularly affected due to their high valuations.

Is the Sell-Off Overblown?

Some analysts view the sell-off as an opportunity to buy AI hardware stocks, arguing that DeepSeek’s cost claims may be overstated or that the model may rely on unauthorized hardware access.

Others believe that reduced training costs could spur greater AI adoption, ultimately benefiting hardware companies. However, there is also the possibility that demand may shift toward inferencing hardware, which applies AI models in real-world scenarios, rather than the training hardware that has driven much of the spending so far.

Despite the volatility, the correction highlights the risks associated with high valuations, even for strong performers in the AI sector.
