Stranger Things fans, rejoice! The highly anticipated fifth and final season of the hit Netflix series has officially begun filming. On January 8, 2024, Netflix announced the news on X, sharing a black-and-white photo of the Stranger Things cast back on set.
The Duffer brothers, the creators of Stranger Things, have confirmed that Season 5 will be the show’s last. In an open letter to fans, they wrote: “Seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for Stranger Things. At the time, we predicted the story would last four to five seasons. It proved too large to tell in four, but—as you’ll see for yourselves—we are now hurtling toward our finale.
“While details about the plot of Stranger Things Season 5 are being kept tightly under wraps, we do know a few key details:
- The season will pick up right where Season 4 left off, with the Upside Down having taken over Hawkins. The war between the Upside Down and Hawkins is fully on.
- Will Byers (played by Noah Schnapp) will be a “primary focus” of the final season, as the show aims to “circle back to Season 1.”
- A new cast member has been announced – Linda Hamilton, known for her role in The Terminator, will be joining the Stranger Things universe, though her exact role is still a mystery.
As for when we can expect to see Stranger Things Season 5, the Duffer brothers have hinted that the final season likely won’t premiere until mid-2024 at the earliest. The writers’ room is currently hard at work, but production was temporarily halted due to the ongoing WGA strike.
Fans will have to wait patiently, but the Duffer brothers have promised that the ending of Stranger Things will be worth the wait. As Ross Duffer said, “It also feels sort of inevitable.
Then when you come up with it, you’re like, ‘Oh yeah well, that is absolutely what is has to be.'” Get ready, Hawkins is about to face its biggest challenge yet.
