Sony To Focus More on Movies and TV Over PS5 Games in 2025

Sony has started 2025 with a surprising shift, focusing more on movies and TV shows rather than new PS5 games. At CES 2025, the company announced three major adaptations:

  1. Horizon Zero Dawn: A film adaptation of the popular game, replacing the previously planned Netflix series.
  2. Helldivers 2: A movie adaptation, which fans jokingly compare to Starship Troopers.
  3. Ghost of Tsushima Anime: Set for a 2027 release, adapting the Ghost of Tsushima: Legends multiplayer mode with a mythological twist.

Current PlayStation Projects

Sony now has seven movie adaptations in development, including Days Gone, Gravity Rush, and an Uncharted sequel. The only confirmed release date is for the Until Dawn movie, debuting in April 2025.

On the TV side, the second seasons of The Last of Us and Twisted Metal are in progress, alongside a God of War series for Amazon Prime, though its production has hit delays.

Fewer Game Announcements

For games, Sony has only four first-party titles officially in development:

  • Ghost of Yōtei
  • Wolverine
  • Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet
  • Fairgame$

This limited lineup has left fans questioning Sony’s priorities, especially with long-dormant franchises like Days Gone and Gravity Rush receiving movie adaptations but no game sequels.

What’s Next?

While Sony’s focus on multimedia expansion is clear, fans are eagerly awaiting more game announcements.

A future State of Play event may provide answers, but for now, Sony seems intent on building its cinematic universe.
