Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently acknowledged one of the company’s significant oversights: underestimating the importance of web search.

In a conversation with YouTuber Dwarkesh Patel, Nadella reflected on how Microsoft failed to recognize the potential of search, while Google capitalized on it to build a substantial business.

Nadella admitted that Microsoft initially believed the web would remain decentralized and did not foresee the value creation that search would bring. “We missed what turned out to be the biggest business model on the web,” he stated, highlighting Google’s foresight and execution in this area.

He emphasized that understanding technological shifts is not enough; companies must also identify where new business opportunities will arise. “These business model shifts are probably tougher than even the tech trend changes,” Nadella explained, pointing out the challenges of adapting to new business models.

Throughout his career, Nadella has witnessed several major technology shifts, including the transition from mainframes to personal computers and the rise of client-server architecture. He noted how Microsoft had to adapt when browsers like Mosaic and Netscape changed application development.

Nadella’s reflections serve as a reminder of the importance of recognizing and adapting to emerging business models in the ever-evolving tech landscape.
