PlayStation 2 Officially Crowned Best-Selling Console Ever

Sony PlayStation 2

To celebrate the PlayStation’s 30th anniversary, Sony revealed that the PlayStation 2 has sold over 160 million consoles worldwide since its 2000 release.

This cements its position as the best-selling gaming console of all time.

The PS2 is followed by the Nintendo DS, which sold 154.02 million units, and the Nintendo Switch, which sold 146 million.

While the Nintendo Switch is the closest contender, its recent sales have slowed as gamers await news of its successor.

Though the PS2’s dominance has been known, this is Sony’s first official confirmation of its lifetime sales.

Previously, estimates placed the figure at around 159 million, based on Sony’s 2011 report of 150 million units sold and additional analysis.

Sony also launched a new webpage detailing milestones across all its consoles, from the original PlayStation to the PS VR2.

The company is making waves for its plans too, with reports hinting at a return to the handheld console market.

The PlayStation 2’s record is a testament to its legacy and lasting influence on gaming history.
