Disney’s Moana continues to prove its cultural impact, with the original soundtrack achieving an impressive milestone: 400 weeks on the Billboard 200 chart.
This longevity cements the album as one of the most successful soundtracks of all time, even as the recently released Moana 2 soundtrack struggles to make its mark.
A Legacy of Success
Released in 2016, the Moana album was a critical and commercial triumph, much like the film itself, which grossed nearly $700 million globally.
The soundtrack, largely penned by Lin-Manuel Miranda, remains a fan favourite, powered by its iconic lead single, “How Far I’ll Go.”
Two versions of the song charted on the Billboard Hot 100, with Auliʻi Cravalho’s rendition peaking at No. 41 and Alessia Cara’s version reaching No. 56.
As of this week, the original soundtrack has spent 400 weeks on the Billboard 200, a feat achieved by only 24 other albums currently on the chart.
It joins the ranks of legendary projects from artists like AC/DC, Fleetwood Mac, and Bob Marley.
Sequel Struggles
In stark contrast, the Moana 2 soundtrack has underperformed. Despite the anticipation surrounding the sequel, the album only reached No. 107 on the Billboard 200 and quickly fell off. Its focus track, “Beyond,” failed to capture the same audience as “How Far I’ll Go.”
Even on the Soundtracks chart, the original Moana album outshines its sequel, currently ranking at No. 8 compared to Moana 2 at No. 9.
What’s Driving the Enduring Popularity?
The original Moana soundtrack continues to sell well, moving 10,000 equivalent units in the past week alone, according to Luminate.
While this represents a slight dip from the previous week, its enduring appeal speaks to the strength of its composition and its connection with fans.
The Bigger Picture
As Disney reflects on the mixed reception of Moana 2, the original film and its music remain a shining example of the studio’s ability to create timeless hits.
While the sequel’s soundtrack may not have reached the same heights, the legacy of the first Moana continues to inspire audiences worldwide.
