No New Valve Hardware in Development, Says Steam Deck Developer

Valve has addressed the recent rumors surrounding a potential collaboration with AMD to create a new device powered by RDNA 4 hardware.

These rumors, which suggested a Steam Machine revival, were quickly dismissed by the company, with Valve clarifying there is no such project in development.

This statement comes just a month after Valve also shut down speculation about a potential Ryzen Z2 version of the Steam Deck.

Although Valve has been working closely with AMD to improve Linux drivers for AMD hardware, the company emphasized that recent updates to AMD’s RDNA 4 architecture are not indicative of any upcoming hardware release.

Pierre-Loup Griffais, a senior developer for the Steam Deck, explained that Valve has been involved with Mesa Vulkan drivers for AMD’s hardware since the Vega architecture, and the latest driver updates are part of ongoing work, not a signal of new hardware plans.

“We’ve done pre-release Mesa Vulkan work on every AMD architecture since Vega thanks to them kindly providing hardware, so there’s nothing meaningful to read into there,” said Griffais.

While Valve has been improving Linux support, it is important to note that there is still no solid evidence pointing to a new Valve device with SteamOS.

However, rumors have surfaced about a device codenamed ‘Fremont’, along with potential designs for a Deckard controller and a Steam Controller 2.
