Nintendo Switch 2 vs Switch

Nintendo has officially unveiled the Nintendo Switch 2, confirming a long-speculated feature: backwards compatibility.

While the new console will support many original Switch games, a caveat has emerged—certain titles may not be compatible.

The announcement came via the Switch 2 reveal trailer, which highlighted its ability to play “exclusive games as well as Nintendo Switch titles.” However, it also included the disclaimer that “certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported.”

Nintendo has not yet clarified which games will be excluded, promising further details at a later date, likely during the Nintendo Direct event on April 2, 2025.

This uncertainty could frustrate gamers with extensive physical or digital libraries who hoped to trade in their old consoles and continue playing their collections on the new hardware.

Physical game collectors might also find their boxed games collecting dust if compatibility is limited.

Speculation suggests that most mainstream Switch games will work on the new console, with exceptions likely limited to specialized titles such as Nintendo Labo.

For now, fans are advised to hold onto their games and await further clarification from Nintendo.

The Switch 2’s backwards compatibility is a significant step forward for Nintendo, but questions remain about how comprehensive the feature will be.
