Nintendo Switch 2 Launch Day Guide: Retailer Events, Stock, and Tips

The Nintendo Switch 2 will release on June 5, 2025, and many major US retailers have announced their plans for launch day. Here’s what you need to know to get your hands on the new console.

Walmart will start selling the Switch 2 online and in-store at 12 AM ET on June 5. While there is no midnight event in stores, customers can order online as soon as sales go live. In-store stock will be available during regular hours, so arriving early is advised.

Preorders from Walmart are expected to arrive by 9 AM local time on launch day, but it’s wise to double-check your order status.

Best Buy will hold special midnight launch events at select stores. Doors open at 12 AM ET (11 PM CT, 9 PM PT) on June 5. These stores will sell the console in person only; no online sales at launch. Customers picking up or buying a Switch 2 will receive a limited-edition commemorative coin. Stock is expected to be very limited, so showing up early is key.

Target will sell the Switch 2 in stores during normal business hours on June 5, with online sales opening on June 6. To manage demand, Target will use a ticketing system for both in-store and online sales. Customers should get tickets early to secure a console.

GameStop is allowing customers to line up starting at 3 PM local time on June 5. Not every store will participate in the early lineup or midnight sale, so check with your local GameStop. Additional units will be available beyond preorders, but no online sales are confirmed.

Demand for the Switch 2 is very high. Consoles sell out quickly, so it’s important to be ready on launch day. If you want the full experience, remember that upgrading certain Switch 1 games to Switch 2 versions will cost extra — like $9.99 for Zelda titles if you’re a Nintendo Online subscriber.

Nintendo has also raised prices on most Switch 2 accessories due to tariffs. Expect about a $5 increase on controllers and a $10 increase on the Dock Set, which now costs $119.99.

If you want the Switch 2 and accessories on launch day, prepare early and check with your preferred retailer for their exact plans.
