Moonshot Joins Open-Source Movement With New AI Model Kimi K2

Chinese artificial intelligence startup Moonshot AI has launched a new open-source AI model, Kimi K2, as part of its efforts to reclaim a leading position in China’s competitive AI sector.

The release, announced Friday, comes amid a broader move by Chinese tech companies to open-source their AI models—a strategy that contrasts with the approach taken by many U.S. firms, such as OpenAI and Google, which keep their most advanced models proprietary.

Moonshot AI said that Kimi K2 offers improved coding capabilities and strong performance in general agent tasks and tool integration. The company also claimed that the model outperforms other open-source systems, including DeepSeek’s V3, and matches or exceeds certain functions of U.S. models developed by firms like Anthropic, particularly in software development tasks.

Founded in 2023 by Tsinghua University graduate Yang Zhilin and backed by internet giant Alibaba, Moonshot quickly rose to prominence in 2024, known for its long-text analysis and AI search features. However, the company’s position weakened after DeepSeek introduced lower-cost models, including the R1 in January, which disrupted the global AI market.

Kimi, Moonshot’s main AI application, dropped from third to seventh place in monthly active users between August 2024 and June 2025, according to Chinese data tracker aicpb.com.

Moonshot’s move to open-source Kimi K2 is seen as an effort to rebuild developer engagement and technological credibility. Analysts say this strategy may also help Chinese companies strengthen global influence while countering U.S. efforts to curb China’s technological growth.

Other major Chinese firms that have released open-source models include Alibaba, Tencent, Baidu, and DeepSeek.
