    Google Gemini CLI

Google has released Gemini CLI, a powerful and open-source AI tool that brings its Gemini 2.5 Pro model directly into developers’ command lines — completely free with unmatched usage limits.

Google has officially launched Gemini CLI, a new open-source AI agent designed for developers who work in the terminal.

The tool brings the power of Gemini 2.5 Pro to the command line, offering advanced coding support, content generation, problem-solving, and automation — all with generous usage limits.

Developers can access 1 million token context, make 60 requests per minute, and up to 1,000 requests per day — entirely free using a personal Google account. For professionals needing more control, Gemini CLI also supports paid options through Google AI Studio or Vertex AI.

    What Gemini CLI Offers:

    • AI-first coding in your terminal, built for real-time code generation, debugging, and automation.
    • Command execution and troubleshooting powered by natural language prompts.
    • Support for Google Search, Model Context Protocol (MCP), and team or individual customization via GEMINI.md files.
    • Open-source flexibility under Apache 2.0, with full access to the code on GitHub.

The Gemini CLI shares its core technology with Gemini Code Assist, Google’s AI-powered coding assistant for VS Code. Now, developers can get the same AI support in both terminal and IDE environments, with features like multi-step reasoning, error recovery, and feature planning.

    Getting Started Is Easy:

Anyone with a Google account can start using Gemini CLI for free. Installation takes less than a minute, and once set up, the terminal becomes a smart, AI-powered development companion.

Taylor Mullen, Senior Staff Engineer, and Ryan J. Salva, Senior Director of Product Management at Google, said the goal is to make AI accessible in the tools developers already use — without barriers.
