Meta Messenger Drops Nonbinary and Transgender Themes Amid Policy Shifts

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has removed transgender and nonbinary themes from the company’s Messenger app, sparking backlash from employees and the LGBTQ+ community.

The themes, introduced to make the platform more inclusive, were quietly phased out as part of a broader shift in Meta’s internal policies.

This decision is one of several recent moves by Meta to roll back diversity and inclusion initiatives.

Reports suggest that these changes align with the expected values of the incoming U.S. administration under President-elect Trump.

    Internal Backlash and Employee Concerns

The removal of transgender and nonbinary themes has caused internal controversy. On Meta’s Workplace platform, employees in the @Pride group voiced their frustration.

Some employees announced their resignation, while others expressed concern about the company’s commitment to inclusivity.

Meta’s Chief Marketing Officer, Alex Schultz, addressed the concerns in a Workplace post. He acknowledged the criticism but suggested that issues like transgender rights have become overly politicized.

    Meta’s Broader Policy Shifts

In addition to removing the themes from Messenger, Meta has discontinued its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs.

Joel Kaplan, Meta’s Chief Global Affairs Officer, defended these changes, stating they aim to focus on individual talent rather than characteristics like race or gender.

“These decisions allow us to build the best teams by evaluating people as individuals,” Kaplan said in an interview with Fox News Digital.

The company has also ended its fact-checking system on Facebook and Instagram, replacing it with a Community Notes program. Zuckerberg explained that the previous system was seen as biased and eroded public trust.

    Public and Social Media Reactions

The removal of transgender and nonbinary themes from Messenger has drawn sharp criticism on social media. Advocacy groups and activists accuse Meta of abandoning its commitment to diversity and inclusion.

“Removing these features sends a harmful message to transgender and nonbinary users,” one critic wrote on Twitter.

Meta’s actions are part of a broader trend among corporations reassessing their diversity programs in response to political and cultural shifts. However, critics argue that such decisions alienate marginalized communities and undermine years of progress toward workplace inclusivity.

    What’s Next for Meta?

As Meta continues to reshape its policies, the company faces increasing scrutiny from employees, advocacy groups, and the public. Whether these changes will impact Meta’s reputation or its ability to attract diverse talent remains to be seen.

The debate over Meta’s inclusivity efforts reflects larger societal tensions, raising questions about the balance between corporate values and political realities.
