    M4 MacBook Air

Apple has introduced the MacBook Air M4, the latest version of its thin and light laptop. The new model comes with faster performance, a better camera, and a new Sky Blue color. At the same time, Apple has discontinued the older M2 and M3 MacBook Air models.

If you’re thinking about buying a MacBook Air or upgrading your current model, it’s important to know the differences between the M2, M3, and M4 versions. Here’s a simple comparison to help you choose the right one.

    Performance

The biggest difference between the three models is their Apple Silicon chips.

    • The M2 chip offers good performance for everyday tasks like browsing, streaming, and office work.
    • The M3 chip is about 17% faster in single-core tasks and 21% faster in multi-core tasks than the M2, making it better for more demanding apps.
    • The M4 chip delivers 25% better single-core performance and 30% faster multi-core performance than the M3. This makes the M4 ideal for photo editing, video editing, and multitasking.

If you’re upgrading from an older M1 MacBook Air or an Intel-based MacBook, the M4 will feel much faster.

    Camera and Video Calls

Apple has improved the camera on the latest MacBook Air models:

    • The M2 and M3 models feature a 1080p FaceTime HD camera with basic video quality.
    • The M4 model includes a 12MP camera with Center Stage support, which automatically keeps you in the frame during video calls. It also offers better voice clarity and microphone modes for clearer calls.

If you make frequent video calls, the M4 model is a much better choice.

    External Display Support

The M4 MacBook Air is the only model that can connect to two external displays while the laptop is open. The M2 and M3 models only support one external display, unless the lid is closed.

This feature makes the M4 ideal for professionals who work with multiple monitors.

    Design and Colors

All three models have the same thin and lightweight design. However, Apple introduced a new Sky Blue color with the M4 MacBook Air. The older models are available in Midnight, Starlight, Silver, and Space Gray.

Apple also added a fingerprint-resistant coating on the Midnight color to reduce smudges.

    Battery Life

The battery life is consistent across all three models, offering up to 18 hours of video playback. However, the M4 model is more power-efficient thanks to its advanced chip technology.

    Price

Here’s how the starting prices compare:

    • M2 MacBook Air (2022): $999 (discontinued)
    • M3 MacBook Air (2024): $1,099 (discontinued)
    • M4 MacBook Air (2025): $999

Apple offers education discounts that can lower the price by at least $100.

    Should You Upgrade?

    • If you’re using an M1 MacBook Air or an Intel-based MacBook, the M4 model is a great upgrade with faster performance and better features.
    • If you own an M2 or M3 MacBook Air, upgrading to the M4 isn’t necessary unless you need more performance, better video calls, or dual external display support.
    • If you’re looking for the best value for everyday use, a refurbished M2 or M3 MacBook Air could save you money while still offering excellent performance.

The MacBook Air M4 is Apple’s most powerful and feature-rich Air model yet. It offers faster performance, a better camera, and support for multiple displays. However, the upgrades are not significant enough to justify upgrading from the M2 or M3 models for most users.

If you’re buying your first MacBook Air or upgrading from an older device, the M4 model is the best choice for long-term performance and future-proofing. However, if you can find a refurbished M2 or M3 model at a discount, they still offer great value in 2025.
