Legal Dispute May Stop Mac Miller and Madlib Album Release

Fans hoping for a new album by Mac Miller and Madlib may be disappointed. A recent lawsuit from Madlib’s former manager says the album won’t be released as planned.

Madlib had promised in 2023 that he was finishing a joint album with the late Mac Miller. However, Madlib’s ex-manager, Eothen “Egon” Alapatt, filed a countersuit in Los Angeles accusing Madlib of misconduct. Egon claims Madlib ended their partnership suddenly in 2022 and took control of shared projects without permission.

Egon says Madlib’s new label, Madlib Invazion, violates trademarks owned by their old company, Madicine Show. This caused problems with projects that belong to Madicine Show, including the unreleased Mac Miller album and an unfinished Freddie Gibbs album. Both projects reportedly involve Sony Music.

Madlib and Mac Miller, who worked together under the name Maclib, had teased the album since 2019. Fans also know they collaborated with artists like Talib Kweli and Thundercat.

Madlib had filed a lawsuit accusing Egon of mismanagement and locking him out of important business platforms. Egon’s countersuit calls Madlib’s claims baseless and accuses him of profiting from their earlier ventures under similar brand names.

Egon also faced a legal case in 2023 when MF Doom’s widow sued him over personal notebooks of the late rapper. That case was settled, and the documents were returned.

The court will decide who is right in this legal battle, which affects the legacies of Mac Miller, Madlib, MF Doom, and Freddie Gibbs.
