Lando Norris has reignited debate over the 2021 Formula 1 season after saying Lewis Hamilton “should have been” an eight-time world champion.

The comment came during a McLaren Victory Lap event at the Eventim Apollo in London. Norris was asked about Hamilton’s chances for the 2026 season with Ferrari under new regulations. Fans in the crowd shouted “Eight!” in reference to the controversial 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Smiling, Norris responded that Hamilton has not won just seven titles and added that it “should’ve been eight.” The remark drew loud reactions from the audience and quickly spread across social media.

Hamilton officially holds seven world championships, tied with Michael Schumacher for the most in F1 history. The 2021 finale remains one of the sport’s most disputed moments, when a late safety car restart allowed Max Verstappen to overtake Hamilton and win the title.

Norris also praised Hamilton’s career, saying his success did not happen by accident and that he has proven himself in many different conditions. He said he hopes to see Hamilton fighting at the top again.

The clip went viral within hours. Many Hamilton fans praised Norris for speaking openly, while some Verstappen supporters accused him of reopening old controversy.

The moment comes as Formula 1 prepares for major regulation changes in 2026. Hamilton is entering another season with Ferrari, while Norris heads in as the reigning 2025 world champion.

Although the sport has moved on from 2021, the debate clearly still resonates with fans. Norris’ comment shows that even years later, that title battle remains a sensitive topic in Formula 1.
