Huawei’s Kirin 9020 chipset is creating waves in the tech world, powering the Mate 70 series and the Mate X6 foldable phone.
As the successor to the Kirin 9000 series, this 3nm SoC promises significant improvements in performance, energy efficiency, and AI capabilities.
CPU and GPU Details
The Kirin 9020 features a 12-core CPU configuration, which includes:
- 2 high-performance cores clocked at 2.5 GHz, likely based on Huawei’s in-house Taishan architecture.
- 6 mid-cores running at 2.15 GHz, potentially also Taishan-based.
- 4 energy-efficient cores at 1.6 GHz, possibly ARM Cortex-A510s.
This setup allows for excellent multitasking and performance, with hyperthreading capabilities further enhancing its efficiency.
For graphics, the Maleoon 920 GPU offers a significant upgrade over the previous Maleoon 910, running up to 840MHz. While details about the architecture remain scarce, early reports indicate a substantial improvement in graphics performance.
Performance Gains and Efficiency
Though official benchmarks are not fully available, internal tests suggest a 40% performance boost compared to the Kirin 9010. The improvements are attributed to the upgraded CPU and GPU, as well as optimizations in power management.
The Kirin 9020 is also more power-efficient, with a 20% reduction in power consumption due to architectural refinements and a more efficient manufacturing process.
Connectivity and Features
One of the most exciting features of the Kirin 9020 is its potential to be the first 3GPP R18 5G-A SoC, which integrates satellite access into 5G systems. This would enable seamless communication even in remote areas. It is also rumored to include a dedicated satellite module for enhanced connectivity.
A Unique Design
Teardowns of devices powered by the Kirin 9020 reveal a larger and thicker carrier board compared to previous Kirin chips, suggesting a more complex design. This could indicate the integration of additional components, such as the rumored satellite module.
Despite the limited official information, the Kirin 9020 is shaping up to be a top-tier chipset, offering exceptional performance and cutting-edge connectivity features.
Stay tuned for more updates as Huawei continues to unveil details about this powerful new processor.
